skirting, front and rear. Ample clearance for the use of tire chains on at least the outside driving
wheels shall be provided in accordance with SAE J683. Molded rubber splash trim shall be
installed around the outside edge of both the front and rear wheelhousings.

3.5.3.3 Floor coverings. The under seat floor area and the wheelhousings shall be
covered with not less than 1/8-inch thick rubber or synthetic rubber blend material. The aisle
and entrance area shall be covered with not less than 3/16-inch thick rubber or synthetic rubber
blend ribbed material. Coverings shall be properly installed and adequately sealed at the joints.
The floor in the driver's area shall be covered with a mat or with the same materials as used in
the underseat or aisle area.
3.5.3.4 Rear step/seat. When specified (see 6.2), a rear step, capable of being folded into
the cargo area, shall be provided. When folded in, it shall serve as an attendant's seat that shall
be not less than 18 inches deep. The step shall be not less than 15 inches wide and 10 inches
deep. The step side shall have a nonskid tread. The seat side shall be padded and covered, using
material identical to that used on the passenger's seats.
3.5.3.5 Rear loading ramp. When specified (see 6.2), a walk-up patient loading ramp
shall be provided at the rear of bus. The ramp shall be made of lightweight materials, consistent
with the specified performance criteria. The ramp shall be not less than 26 inches wide and shall
have fiberglass antiskid surface covered with a nonskid material. When in use, the ramp angle
with the ground shall be not more than 24 degrees. The ramp shall be capable of rigidly
supporting two litter bearers and one litter patient, each person weighing 200 pounds. The
maximum deflection of the center of the ramp shall be not greater than 1.50 inches under any
normal combination of static or dynamic loads imposed by the position or motion of the
two litter bearers and one litter patient. Provisions for securely stowing the ramp when the bus is
in transit shall be provided under the floor between the frame rails with access from the rear of
the bus. Stowage provisions shall enable the ramp to be quickly placed in the operating position
by not more than two men without the use of tools. The underfloor ramp storage compartment
shall be flared out at the opening to accommodate loading the ramp. When stowed, the ramp
shall not interfere with the use of the attendant's seat (see 3.5.3.4), or interfere with the opening
and closing of the rear door. The ramp shall be similar or equal to the easy slide model

3.5.4 Sides and roof. The sides and roof shall have sheet metal outer panels, lined on the
inside and integrated with the body structure.
