3.5.7.1 Horizontal sliding windows. In addition to the requirements of 3.5.7, horizontal
sliding type windows shall be of the push-out type, hinged at the top, and of adequate size to
permit unloading litter patients through the windows in an emergency. Stops to restrict the
horizontal sliding action of the windows shall be furnished and shall be set to provide an opening
of approximately (but not exceeding) six inches.
3.5.7.2 Tinting. When air conditioning is furnished (see 3.5.11), tinted, heat absorbing
window safety glass shall be furnished. Entrance door windows, driver's left side window(s),
and the windshield shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's standard for tinted glass. Side
windows in the passenger area shall be tinted to double density allowing approximately
50 percent light transmission. Rear window(s) shall be tinted to quadruple density allowing
approximately 35 percent light transmission.
3.5.8 Seating. Seating shall comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulation 393.91. Seats shall provide capacity for the required number of adult passengers
(see 1.2). Seats located at or near wheelhousings shall be installed to minimize interference with
passenger comfort. Seats shall be secured to prevent shifting under all operating conditions.
Seat frames shall be of formed, metal tube construction. All bolts, nuts, and fasteners shall be of
corrosion-resistant material. On type III buses, all 2-passenger seats being within a row shall be
mounted on a recessed track to permit varied arrangement of seats.
3.5.8.1 Seating for type III. Seats shall be the manufacturer's standard 34-inch width.
Width of rearmost seat(s) and front seat at entrance may be reduced to a nominal 26 inches, if
required, to provide access to entrance and emergency exit. Seat cushions shall have a free depth
of not less than 17 inches from the front edge to the seat back. Seat cushions shall be solid foam
padding tapering from a minimum of 5 inches at the front to 3 inches at the rear or not less than
2 inches of padding on a spring base. Seat backs shall be shaped and padded to assure passenger
comfort. Seat backs shall be not less than 18 inches free height from cushion to the top of the
seat back cushion. The top, the upper corners, and the upper 10 inches of the rear surface of each
passenger seat back (except the rearmost seats) shall be constructed of or covered with force
distributing material. The material shall minimize force and spread the area of contact upon
impact by an occupant in the next seat to the rear. The rear surface of the seat back below the
force distributing material shall be upholstered or covered with aluminized steel or bright finish
zinc coated steel. Seat assemblies shall be installed on not less than 29-inch centers. Where
padded barriers or obstructions are located at door entrance, the front of the seat cushion shall be
not closer than 10 inches from the padded barrier or obstruction. Seating shall provide two rows
of two-passenger seats, all facing forward. The seatbacks shall be adjustable without the use of
tools, and shall fold down flat on the seat cushion in an essentially horizontal position. With seat
backs folded down, sufficient space shall be provided above the seats to allow both tiers of
