loaded litters to be put in place (see 3.5.13). All passenger seats shall be readily removable from
the inside of the bus, without the use of tools. Seats shall be mounted in recessed track to
facilitate removal and reinstallation. Seat track shall be marked to show the standard locations
for seats. Seat track and mounting devices shall not present a tripping hazard to litter bearers
during litter loading and unloading operations.
3.5.8.2 Seating for type IV. The type IV bus seating shall be of longitudinal bench type
installed on both sides of the vehicle. Each bench shall be divided into 3 sections by 8-inch high
dividers of heavy gage corrosion-resistant metal. Exposed edges shall be covered with stainless
steel, stainless steel clad, or plastic coated steel tubing at least 0.75 inch in diameter. Each
section shall be a minimum of 94 inches in length, 24.25 inches in width, and 16 inches in height
from the floor. Each section shall support 5 seated passengers or a NATO, Army, or Stokes
litter. Four 5x3-inch (with 0.50 inch lip) litter leg cups of corrosion-resistant metal shall be
mounted in parallel pairs on each section of the seat. The seat cushion shall be formed around
the litter leg cup, leaving the cup exposed. The centerline of the litter leg cups will be
approximately 24 inches from the dividers, 3 inches from the wall on 20.75 inch centers
crosswise, and46-inch centers lengthwise (see figure 1).
3.5.8.2.1 Seat and backrest for type IV. For type IV vehicles, both the backrests and the
full seat around the litter leg cups shall be padded with flexible polyethylene foam. The foam
shall be nonallergenic, flame-retardant, nontoxic, and shall not absorb moisture or body odors.
Density shall be 2 pounds per cubic foot to 2.4 pounds per cubic foot. Firmness of the foam
shall be 35 pounds to 70 pounds at a 25 percent deflection over an area of 50 square inches. The
foam padding shall be capable of withstanding 100 percent humidity and an ambient temperature
from minus 65°F to plus 125°F without any evidence of deformation or cell breakdown.
Flexible latex polyester foam padding is not acceptable. Thickness of padding shall be
1.50 inches for the seat and 2 inches for the backrests. Padding for seats and backrests shall be
covered with material specified in 3.5.8.3. The height from the top of the leg cup lip to the top of
the upholstery shall be not greater than 1 inch. The backrests shall run the full length of the seat
bench. The lower edge shall be 8 inches above the seat and shall extend to the lower edge of the
windows. The seats and backrests shall be designed so as not to require removal or hamper the
effectiveness of the vehicle when utilized to transport litter patients.
3.5.8.2.2 Safety straps for type IV. Each bench seat section of the type IV vehicle shall
be provided with three 2-inch wide nylon safety straps with proper anchors so as to strap in a
litter patient at the chest, waist, and knees when an Army litter is placed on the bench seat.
Litters are loaded head forward. Each strap shall be not less than 72 inches in length. Two
additional straps shall be provided to prevent movement of the litter. It is intended that the straps
