coil, or rubber springs may be used in conjunction with the air springs. The two-air-spring
system shall include shock absorbers; two one-piece beams and two air springs to transfer the
load directly to the axle with the forward portion of the one-piece beam free to move in
low-friction wear pads; and a height-control valve system capable of maintaining a given frame
height. The full air system shall incorporate four radius rods for the four-air-spring type and
three radius rods for the two-air-spring type to control lateral and longitudinal movement.
Radius rods shall transmit driving and braking forces to the chassis body. Each end of the radius
rods shall be equipped with rubber bushings that do not require periodic lubrication. The
suspension shall be so designed that the vehicle can be lifted and towed from the rear without
damage to the suspension.
3.4.9 Axles. Axle ratings shall be at least equal to the load imposed on each axle,
measured at the ground, when the vehicle is loaded to its specified GVW. The vehicle shall be
equipped with single front and single rear axles. Unless a two-speed axle is furnished, a single
reduction drive axle shall be provided at the rear. Torque rods shall be furnished for the rear
axle(s) if available as the manufacturer's standard or option. Axle gear ratio furnished shall
enable vehicle performance required in 3.3.1 through 3.3.1.2.
3.4.9.1 Traction control. When specified (see 6.2), the vehicle shall be furnished with a
traction control on the rear axle. The traction control shall actuate automatically to insure that
power is transmitted to the wheel having traction when the opposite wheel loses traction.
Maximum traction capabilities shall be maintained at all times under each drive wheel for the life
of the vehicle.
3.4.9.2 Two-speed axle. When specified (see 6.2), a two-speed axle shall be furnished.
The axle shall be equipped with an electric, vacuum, or air shift and provided with ratios which
will permit proper gear splitting. The gear ratio shall provide the performance specified in
3.3.1 through 3.3.1.2.

3.4.10 Wheels, rims, and tires. The vehicle shall be equipped with single front and dual
rear wheels. Rim size, tire size, type and ply rating shall be the same for all wheels on each
vehicle. Multi-piece rims shall not be furnished. Tire and rim ratings shall conform to Tire and
Rim Association or to the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation recommendations for
the type and size of tires furnished. Disc type wheels shall be furnished.
3.4.10.1 Tires. Tires shall be tubeless type with highway tread. Unless otherwise
specified, low profile or standard profile tires may be furnished. When specified (see 6.2), low
profile tires shall be furnished. When low profile tires are furnished, the minimum vehicle
ground clearance (see 3.2.6(d)) shall be maintained. Steel belted radials, or when specified
(see 6.2) bias ply tires, shall be furnished. Tires shall have a rated capacity at least equal to the
