3.5.4.1 Exterior. The sides shall be fullskirted and equipped with two full-length rub
rails extending along each side of the body; one below platform level and one at or
approximately at seat height. A substantial snow rail, at the bottom of the skirt will be
acceptable in lieu of the lower rub rail, if such rub rail is not offered by the manufacturer as a
standard or optional item.
3.5.4.2 Interior. The body interior, including sides, roof, and front and rear ends, shall be
fully lined with sheet metal panels.
3.5.4.3 Insulation. Nonsettling, nonhygroscopic, fungus resistant, fireproof insulation
shall be installed in the roof, side, and end walls. In addition, a coat of material shall be applied
to the inner (not exposed) surfaces of exterior panels and other exterior sheet metal as added
insulation and to prevent drumming. Insulation shall be of sufficient density to enable the air
conditioner to meet the requirements of 3.5.11.
3.5.4.4 Destination sign compartment. When specified (see 6.2), a destination sign
compartment shall be installed at the front center of the roof above the windshield. The
compartment shall provide not less than 180 square inches of glass enclosed frontal area of a
height to permit reading of 6-inch letters on the sign roller and shall be readily accessible through
a latched door from inside the bus. The destination sign shall be a roller type of a capacity to
apply 15 listings of 6-inch high letters and shell be operable from the interior of the bus. Unless
otherwise specified (see 6.2), a blank destination sign roll shall be furnished. The compartment
shall be illuminated to permit reading of the destination sign at night.
3.5.5 Doors. A service door shall be provided at the front, forward of the front axle, on
the side opposite the driving controls, for use by entering and departing passengers. Rear doors
shall be furnished at the rear for the loading of litter patients. When specified (6.2), a hasp for
padlocking the service door and locking bolt(s) for the rear and emergency doors shall be
provided. The locking bolt(s) for the rear and emergency doors shall include interlock(s) that
prevent the engine from starting when the doors are locked. Doors shall be provided with
compression or overlapping seals to minimize entry of dust, cold air, rain, and road wash.
3.5.5.1 Service door. The service door shall be of the folding leaf type or of one-piece
type with a safety glass panel in the upper and lower sections. The door shall have manual or air
actuated controls conveniently located for driver's operation. when specified (see 6.2), the door
shall be air actuated with individual remote controls for driver's operation provided for each door
furnished. Operating linkage shall be installed within the body or enclosed to preclude
accumulation of mud, ice and snow. Minimum dimensions of clear opening shall be
24 by 74 inches, unobstructed by door seals or door opening mechanism.
