demand of the thermostat. Mountings shall be so as to minimize the transfer of vibration. The
size and weight of the assembly shall be held to a minimum consistent with the Performance
requirements specified herein.
3.5.11.1.1 Engine components. The engine shall be a two- or four-stroke cycle diesel
engine equipped with at least the following components:
(a) Self-starter, 12 volts
(b) Air cleaner.
3.5.11.1.2 Governor. A variable-speed governor shall be furnished. The governor shall
automatically limit the engine speed to the selected rated speed. For type III buses, a governor
adjustment feature shall control the engine at all speeds from the manufacturer's recommended
minimum governed speed up to the maximum operating speed.
3.5.11.1.3 Electrica1 system. The electrical system shall utilize the bus-chassis batteries
and shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations 393.30 through 393.33.
3.5.11.1.4 Fuel pump. A fuel pump shall be furnished on the engine. When lifting fuel
against a head of 4 feet, the pump shall have sufficient capacity to supply the engine at its
maximum rated load. An in-line fuel filter shall be provided, either as a component of the fuel
pump or between the fuel pump and the carburetor.
3.5.11.1.5 Exhaust system. The exhaust system shall be furnished with a spark arresting
muffler and routed to vent fumes away from the body to the side and rear of the rear wheels.
3.5.11.1.6 Auxiliary engine fuel tank. Fuel for the auxiliary engine shall be drawn from
the main fuel tank(s) or from a separate tank specified in 3.4.3.2 and 3.4.3.2.1.

3.5.11.2 Evaporative Air Conditioning. When specified (see 6.2), for typically arid
regions, the vehicle shall be provided with an evaporative type air conditioning system. The air
conditioner shall have sufficient net cooling capacity to meet performance requirements in
3.5.11. The system shall include, but not be limited to any necessary insulation, increased engine
cooling capacity, alternator and battery capabilities.
NOTE: Evaporative air conditioning utilizes 100% outside air.
Evaporative air conditioning is most suitable for use in arid regions
where the relative humidity is low.
