3.5.5.2 Emergency door. The emergency door shall be of the sedan type, equipped with
a slide bar, a cam operated latch, and with a readily operable interior handle. A permanently
installed handle shall be provided for opening the emergency door from outside the bus. A
switch operated by the door bolt shall be connected to a red warning light on the instrument
panel to indicate to the driver when the emergency door is not safely latched. A red emergency
door identification light (see 3.4.2.6.3) shall be installed on the emergency door header. The red
warning light shall actuate when the ignition switch is in the "on" position. The header shall be
marked with the following block letters not less than 2 inches high: "EMERGENCY EXIT" or
"EMERGENCY OOOR. " Rear doors for the buses may be furnished in lieu of an emergency
door if these doors meet the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and the requirements
specified in this paragraph.
3.5.5.3 Rear doors. Two rear doors, one on each side of center, providing a clear
opening width of not less than 49 inches and a height of not less than 64 inches, shall be
furnished for loading and unloading litter patients. Doors shall be hinged at the outer edges and
braced to prevent sagging; shall open not less than 180 degrees; shall be furnished with safety
glass windows in the upper section; and shall be provided with safety catches to prevent
inadvertent closing. In addition, hooks and flexible cables shall be provided to retain each rear
door in the full open position in event of high winds during aircraft loading of the litter patients.
Padding shall be installed above the door opening to prevent head injury. Doors shall be
equipped with a latch operable from inside and outside the body. Further, rubber pads or other
means of protection shall be installed at a location that will prevent damage to the body sides and
doors when doors are in the full open position. A red reflector of 3-inch minimum diameter shall
be installed on the interior surface of each rear door. The reflectors shall be positioned to
provide maximum visibility when the doors are in full open position. At the manufacturer's
option, reflective tape, dark red, conforming to L-S-300, type I, class 3, reflectivity I, may be
furnished. The tape shall be 4 inches wide and shall extend the full width of the door panel(s).
3.5.6 Windshield. A windshield providing maximum practicable driver vision shall be
installed at a slope sufficient to minimize external glare or reflections from inside the body.
3.5.7 Windows. Windows shall be of the size and arrangement suitable for the intended
service and shall provide maximum practicable vision. Safety glass shall be used in all windows.
Windows shall be of the horizontal sliding type with anodized aluminum frames. Windows shall
be provided with fingertip control permitting ready opening and adjustment to various desired
openings. Windows shall be rattleproof and, when closed, rainproof, waterproof and windproof.
All windows shall be fitted with locking devices. Driver's window(s) shall permit use for
signaling and ventilation.
