3.4.19 Accessories and equipment. Chassis equipment shall be complete with all
accessories and equipment furnished as standard equipment by the manufacturer. The following
minimum equipment shall be furnished:
(a)
Key-operated ignition switch
(b)
Ammeter, charging indicator, or voltmeter
(c)
Fuel gage
(d)
Oil pressure gage or red indicator warning light
(e)
Engine coolant temperature gage or high coolant temperature or low coolant level
red indicator warning light
(f)
High coolant temperature or low coolant level alarm buzzer
(g)
Speedometer
(h)
Recording odometer
(i)
Tachometer
(j)
Indicator light to show headlight high beam operating
(k)
Hand throttle.
3.5 Body. The body shall be mounted on a chassis or may be of unit body and chassis
construction. The bus shall be forward control type with seating for the driver forward of the
front axle. The bus shall provide adequate seating for adult passengers and the litter carrying
capacity specified (see 1.2), and other ambulance conversion features specified herein. Type III
buses shall support 12 litters above the forward facing seats, with folding down of seat backs
only. Type IV buses shall hold 6 litters on the longitudinal bench seats on each side of the
vehicle and support 6 additional litters above the seats. The body shall have sides of the
full-skirted type, shall present a generally symmetrical appearance, shall effectively exclude
engine fumes and exhaust gases from the bus interior, and shall provide safe and comfortable
transportation for passengers and driver.
3.5.1 Inside body dimensions. At the seat level, the body inside width shall be not less
than 90 inches. Between the first and last vertical roof bows, through the center of the aisle the
inside height shall be not less than 76 inches.
3.5.1.1 Front entrance clearance (front mounted engine only). The clear opening in the
stepwell, in the entrance area and between the curbside modesty panel and the engine housing
shall be not less than 18 inches.
3.5.2 Construction. The body and roof framing shall be constructed of steel sections,
with metal panels attached outside and inside and properly insulated. All parts, where
applicable, shall be fastened together in a manner which will prevent loosening of bolts, screws
and rivets, and cracking of welded joints when the vehicle is properly maintained and operated
under the intended service conditions. Self-tapping screws shall not be used where subjected to
stress. Wood shall not be used for structural framing. Outside body panels and other sheet metal
shall be of aluminum alloy or steel not less than the gages regularly furnished by the body
