44-passenger buses, domelights shall be installed over each row of two-passenger seats, placed
over the first or second seat from the front, and thereafter over each second seat. For type IV,
30-passenger buses with perimeter seats, domelights shall be placed over the aisle side of each
first or second seating position from the front, and thereafter over the aisle side of each second
seating position. One domelight shall be installed over the driver's area and controlled with a
separate switch. Fluorescent lamps and fixtures may be furnished in lieu of the domelights.
Lamps shall be located on the longitudinal centerline of the aisle of the passenger area for the
entire length. There shall be not less than 4 lamp fixtures in the row. Lamps shall be not less
than 40 watts, and of the high output capacity type. Lamps shall provide a broad distribution of
light. Lamps shall be white. A nonglare reflector or shade and tube guard shall be provided.
The fluorescent lamps shall be furnished with inductive-capacitive type filters for each lamp to
reduce radio interference (see 3.4.2.1). Door-operated ceiling lamp(s) and step lamp(s) shall be
furnished at the service door and installed to provide illumination of the stepwell and ground
adjacent to the steps. An emergency door identification red light with not less than a 3-inch
diameter lens shall be provided in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation
393.92 (see 3.5.5.2). An audible signal to the driver shall be provided to indicate when rear and
emergency door(s) are not properly secured during operation of the vehicle.
3.4.2.6.4 School bus red signal lamps, (type III). Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2),
the type III, 44-passenger vehicle, shall be equipped with four red signal lamps conforming to
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.
3.4.2.6.5 Floodlight. A center roof-mounted floodlight shall be furnished over the rear
door(s) with the operating switch located inside the rear door(s). The floodlight shall be
adjustable and shall include a locking device to secure the floodlight in any selected position.
Mounting shall permit directing the light beam to all points two feet or more to the rear of the
vehicle. The switch shall be labeled as to function.
3.4.2.6.6 Interior lighting (type IV). Interior lighting for type IV vehicles shall be as
specified in 3.4.2.6.3. In addition, with the exception of the door operated ceiling lamp(s) and
step lamp(s) and the red emergency lights, the intensity shall be capable of being controlled by
the driver. In addition, a domelight with an attendant-controlled on and off switch shall be
furnished over each stretcher section approximately 36 inches in back of padded barriers
(modesty panels) and 12 inches from the wall. These domelights shall be provided with a
translucent lens and each light shall provide not less than 40 foot-candles of illumination at seat
level.
3.4.2.7 Master cut-off switch. When specified (see 6.2), an ignition key or driver
manually operated master switch shall be provided to control a magnetic solenoid to shut off all
body electrical equipment except: (a) headlights, (b) running lights required by FMVSS l08 and
