(c) the starting motor. The switch shall be identified as to function. The solenoid shall be rated
for operation under the continuous full load.
3.4.3 Fuel system. The fuel system shall conform to Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulations 393.65 and 393.67.
3.4.3.1 Air cleaner. A single-stage or two-stage dry type air cleaner shall be furnished.
The air cleaner shall include a progressive type indicator to display the degree of air restriction.
The indicator shall be located adjacent to the air cleaner and shall have a red line or other clear
mark to indicate when the filter should be changed.
3.4.3.2 Fuel tank(s). Safety fuel tank(s) conforming to Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Regulations 393.65 and 393.67 shall be furnished. Total capacity of the fuel tank(s) shall be not
less than 60 gallons for vehicles without air conditioning and not less than 80 gallons for vehicles
with air conditioning. Installation of the fuel tank(s) shall not compromise conformance to the
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. When more than one tank is furnished to feed the main
diesel engine, means shall be provided to assure an equalized fuel level in both tanks and means
shall be provided to monitor the fuel level of either tank with a single fuel gage. The tank(s)
shall be located under the floor of the bus. A filler shall be arranged for safe and convenient
filling from the exterior body. The access for the filler neck shall be designed to prevent the
entry of spilled fuel to any point inside the passenger compartment or entrapment between body
walls. Sealing may be accomplished by use of a neoprene rubber thimble or grommet, or other
device installed in the access hole. When the tank filler cap is located behind body skirting, a
front hinged access door shall be furnished. A photoetched, corrosion-resistant plate,
permanently protected decal or stencil, shall be located in a conspicuous place near the filler
opening and shall state "diesel fuel" and "main engine" or "main and auxiliary engine" as
appropriate. When an air conditioning system is furnished (see 3.6.11), the air conditioner
auxiliary diesel engine may operate from the main chassis fuel tank(s) or from a separate tank
specified in 3.4.3.2.1. When specified (see 6.2), when the air conditioner engine operates from
the main engine fuel tank(s), means shall be provided to assure the auxiliary engine does not
draw below 20 percent of the chassis fuel tank capacity.

3.4.3.2.1 Air conditioner auxiliary engine fuel tank. When an air conditioning system is
specified (see 3. 5.11) , and a separate fuel tank to supply the air conditioner auxiliary engine is
furnished, the auxiliary fuel tank shall have a capacity of not less than 20 gallons and shall be
located under the floor. The auxiliary tank shall be a safety fuel tank of welded seam
construction and should be guarded. The tank shall be provided with a fuel level sensor,
connected to a separate fuel gage visible to the seated driver. Gage shall be identified as air
conditioner fuel. A drain shall be provided in a fuel tank sump, located to avoid drainage of fuel
