3.5.4.2 Air conditioning. Automotive air conditioner(s) with required allied components shall be furnished to air condition both the driver and the patient compartments. The air conditioner(s) shall have a total rated cooling capacity of not less than 30,000 British thermal units (Btu) per hour at 95°F dry bulb ambient outside temperature and 67°F wet bulb inside vehicle temperature. The air conditioner(s) shall be an integral part of the vehicle and shall be mounted completely within the vehicle. The air conditioning unit(s) shall not be mounted on the body roof. Air conditioner control switch positions shall be identified.
3.5.4.3 Tinted windows. All exterior windows, including the windshield, shall be of tinted, heat absorbing safety glass. Tinting of lamination material is not acceptable.
3.5.5 Heating system.
3.5.5.1 Driver's compartment. A driver's compartment heater shall be provided and shall be of the engine coolant, heavy duty, blower type. The heater shall include a heavy duty windshield defroster to maintain a clear windshield under high humidity conditions and in temperatures
down to minus l0 F. The heater shall have separate, readily accessible means for controlling airflow to the heater or to defroster ducts. The blower controls shall be mounted in a location within easy reach of the driver. The heater shall be equipped with an engine coolant shutoff valve, for shutting off the flow of coolant to the heater.
3.5.5.2 Patients' compartment. A patients' compartment heater shall be provided and shall be of the engine coolant, heavy duty blower type. The heater shall be located in an underseat stowage compartment or may be an integral part of the air conditioner. If the heater is located in
a compartment, the compartment shall be provided with louvered return air inlet(s) and hot air
outlet(s). The heater shall be equipped with an engine coolant shutoff valve with dash-mounted control readily accessible to the driver for shutting off the flow of coolant to the heater. The blower control switch shall be mounted in a location easily accessible to the seated driver and the attendant. Heater and coolant control positions shall be identified.
3.5.5.3 Auxiliary heater booster. When specified (see 6.2), a fuel fired auxiliary heater booster shall be furnished. The auxiliary heater shall provide additional heated coolant to the patient's compartment heater specified in 3.5.5.2. The auxiliary heater booster combustion chamber shall be mounted outside the patient and driver compartments. The heater fuel supply shall be from the vehicle engine fuel supply.
