3.5.3.1 Body exterior. Exterior sheet metal for the ambulance body roof and side panels shall be not less than 20 gage (0.0359 inch) cold-rolled sheet steel or 0.040 inch thick aluminum. The patients' compartment portion of the roof assembly shall be a one-piece panel, welded or riveted to formed metal roof caps at the periphery of the roof. The roof caps, including the sides, rear

and rear corners, shall be rounded. The roof shall be crowned or shall have a slight pitch to

provide drainage. Drip rails shall be provided over the rear doors. Body side paneling shall be of one piece, down to the rub rail. Body skirting shall be furnished below the rub rail. Circular wheel cutouts at the rear wheels with integral fenders under the body, extending to the bottom of the skirting, shall be furnished. The edges of the skirting, cutouts and fenders shall be beaded, crimped or hemmed. Replaceable rub rails of not less than 16 gage (0.0598 inch) steel shall be installed. When a second rub rail is provided, it shall be located at the bottom of the skirting.

3.5.3.2 Rear doors. Two side hung rear doors with windows shall be furnished. Each door shall be constructed of aluminum alloy structural framing, covered inside and out with a

one-piece, not less than 0.125 inch thick, aluminum sheet. The doors shall provide a clear

opening not less than 55 inches in height. The width of the door opening shall be great enough to allow the loading of Army litters onto seat mounted lower rack skid strips and upper litter rack mounted skid strips with a straight forward motion, with adequate hand clearance. During such loading, clearance between litter handles and the door, the door frame, and the body side and end panels shall be adequate for an attendant's Arctic gloved hand. Both rear doors shall be hinged at the outer edge with a minimum of three heavy duty hinges; shall open not less than 260 degrees from closed position; and shall be provided with suitable check arms or heavy duty hooks to prevent inadvertent closing from the fully opened position. Both rear doors shall be equipped with cam type vertical upper and lower drawbolts, operable from inside the body. In addition,

the curbside rear door drawbolts shall be operable from the outside of the vehicle (by personnel

standing on the ground) by a handle with a key operated lock. A single inside handle for release of both streetside door drawbolts shall be located so that an individual standing on the ground can reach it through the open curbside door. Latch plates at both the top and bottom of the door opening shall be mounted flush with and caulked into the door frame. Drawbolt mechanisms

shall be enclosed in the doors. A grab handle adequate for closing the door by personnel wearing Arctic gloves shall be furnished on the inside of each rear door. A1l handles shall be mounted so that they do not interfere with the rearmost seated patient. The upper section of each rear door shall include a laminated safety glass window not less than 200 square inches in size.
