3.4.8.2 Heavy duty suspension. When specified (see 6.2), heavy duty springs shall be furnished. The heavy duty springs shall have a rated capacity equal to the load imposed, plus at least 10 percent, with the vehicle loaded to specified GVW.
3.4.9 Axles. The front and rear axle ratings shall be at least equal to the load imposed on each axle, measured at the ground, with the vehicle loaded to required GVW. In addition, the front axle rating shall be not less than 4,000 pounds. A single reduction rear axle shall be furnished.
3.4.9.1 Positive traction differential. When specified (see 6.2), a rear axle with positive traction, limited slip, or automatic locking differential shall be furnished.
3.4.10 Wheels, rims, tires and tubes. The vehicle shall be equipped with single front and dual rear wheels. Except as specified herein, rims and tire ratings shall conform to Tire and Rim Association recommendations for the type and size of tires furnished. Rims and disc wheel sizes shall be the same for all wheels. Tire size and load range (ply rating) shall be the same for all tires. When specified (see 6.2), disc type wheels shall be furnished.
3.4.10.1 Tires. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), tires shall be tube type with nondirectional mud and snow tread. Tires shall have a rated capacity at least equal to the load imposed on each wheel, measured at the ground, with the vehicle loaded to required GVW. A tire load range rating of not less than a D (8-ply) shall be furnished. The tires shall conform to Tire and Rim Association recommendations, or to ZZ-T-381 with a size designation system the same as the Tire and Rim Association.
3.4.10.2 Inner tubes. The inner tubes shall be of the proper size for the tires furnished. When mounted on other than drop center rims tire flaps shall be furnished.
3.4.10.3 Carrier for spare tire assembly. Unless otherwise specified (see 6.2), a carrier for a spare wheel or rim and tire assembly shall be installed in a cabinet in the patients' compartment
or under the rear of the vehicle body. Threaded fasteners, when used to secure the spare wheel or
rim or the spare tire assembly in the carrier, shall be constructed of or plated with corrosion- resistant material. The carrier design shall permit removal or installation of the spare wheel or rim or spare tire assembly using only the tools specified in 3.4.15. When the carrier is located under the vehicle, instructions and a means shall be furnished to assist the vehicle operator in lowering the spare tire assembly to the ground.
