3.5.2 Driver's compartment. The driver's compartment (cab) shall be furnished with a door on each side, and with separate seats for the driver and for the assistant driver. Openings in the floor around levers and pedals shall be sealed. The driver's compartment floor shall be completely covered with a floor mat. Interior lighting shall be provided.
3.5.2.1 Driver's compartment doors. The driver's compartment doors shall be the chassis manufacturer's current standard hinged, automotive, truck cab type. The doors shall be furnished with locks, operable from inside the vehicle through mechanical linkage, and with at least the curbside door equipped with an external, key-operated lock. The doors shall be provided with safety glass in the upper section. A crank type regulating mechanism shall be provided for each door window. In addition to the door operating handles, the doors shall be furnished with grab handles on the inside. Drip rails shall be provided above the doors.
3.5.2.2 Driver's compartment seats. The driver's compartment seats and seat backs shall be constructed on framing with cushioned springs or foam rubber padding to provide maximum riding comfort. The seat and seat back cushions shall be upholstered with washable, artificial leather or plastic, nonabsorbent material. The color of the upholstery and the interior finish shall be compatible with the exterior color (see 3.1.1.1). White upholstery shall not be furnished. The driver's seat shall be adjustable forward and backward. Unless easy access from the driver's compartment to the patients' compartment is possible without special provisions, the assistant driver's seat shall be hinged at the front edge to permit the entire seat to be tilted forward or shall be hinged at the rear to permit the back cushion to be folded forward over the seat cushion. Hinged or folding assistant driver's seats shall be capable of being locked in place for safe use during over-the-road travel. Lap type seat belts shall be installed for the driver's and assistant's seats.
3.5.3 Ambulance body. Except as specified herein, the basic body construction shall be of steel, aluminum or combinations thereof, properly protected to prevent galvanic action. Vertical structural body side posts shall be provided on not more than 21-inch centers and shall be secured to bottom and top rails. Floor crossmembers shall be provided on not more than 16-inch centers. Roof bows shall be provided on not more than 21-inch centers. Openings at doorways shall be framed and reinforced with structural members to provide a rigid structure. The body framing, underbody, and roof shall be welded and reinforced at all joints to fulfill dynamic and static loading requirements as encountered by heavy duty off-road usage. The body shall be
completely insulated.
