A detailed sketch or drawing depicting vehicle exterior finish and color scheme, vehicle
identification markings and ambulance markings shall be submitted to the contracting officer for
approval prior to painting.

3.1.1.2 Heavy duty cooling system. A heavy duty cooling system shall be furnished that
will maintain coolant at a temperature below the boiling point with vehicle loaded to rated gross
vehicle weight (GVW) and operated at an altitude of 10,000 feet above sea level or in an ambient
air temperature of not less than 112 degrees Fahrenheit (°F). Thermostatic control of engine
coolant temperature shall be provided. Control of coolant temperature shall be accomplished by
either thermostatically controlled radiator shutters, a thermostatically controlled variable pitch
fan, or by thermostatically controlling the flow of all engine coolant through the radiator.

3.1.1.3 Coolant recovery system and level indicator. A radiator coolant recovery system
or surge tank of adequate size to prevent loss of coolant under conditions specified in 3.1.1.2
shall be furnished. A translucent reservoir, sight gage or other means for checking the coolant
level shall be provided to enable the operator to check the coolant level while standing on the
ground. In addition, a low coolant level and a high coolant temperature alarm buzzer and red
indicator warning light shall be provided on the dash instrument panel.

3.1.1.4 Drain plugs. Drain plugs installed in the transmission and rear axle(s) shall be of
the permanent magnet type.

3.1.1.5 Oil filter. A full flow and a bypass type oil filter shall be furnished unless
otherwise recommended by the engine manufacturer. The full flow oil filter shall be connected
directly to the engine lubrication system and the bypass filter by flexible lines. The inlet and
outlet connections of the bypass filter shall be of different sizes to preclude improper assembly.
The filtering element of the bypass filter shall be in accordance with F-F-351.

3.1.1.6 Wood treatment. Wood flooring shall be treated in accordance with
MIL-STD-1223 or with the manufacturer's standard commercial practice providing equivalent
protection.

3.1.1.7 Towing device(s). Towing device(s) for towing the bus shall be provided on the
front of the bus. The towing device(s) and the front of the bus shall withstand, without any sign
of failure, turning the bus within its minimum turning radius and backing the bus on a level
roadway.
